Varlink, the York based local specialist IT Distributor, is proud to have sponsored Norton Community Primary School's attendance at the environmental themed PA Raspberry Pi Competition Grand Final, which took place on Wednesday 2nd April 2014 at the Science Museum, London.

Now in its second year, PA Consulting's Raspberry Pi challenge saw schools and universities from across the country create environmentally friendly solutions with the credit card sized Raspberry Pi computer.

A team of technology enthused Year 5 pupils from Norton Community Primary School were 1 of only 3 entries that succeeded in making it to the Category 1 Grand Final with their innovative NCP BINMAN system. The solution, which assists with consumer recycling, utilities barcode recognition technology via an Opticon OPR-3201 scanner, which was donated for the project by Opticon, to identify from the barcode database which items of packaging can be recycled. Not only this, but the system also ensures products are recycled correctly by automatically opening the appropriate wheelie with stepper motors controlled from the Pi.
