Digital signage is the fastest growing application for large-area LCDs over the next two years, as well as the sixth fastest growing application for all LCDs, according to DisplaySearch. Despite this, growth in Europe to date has not matched worldwide growth, with strong 35% Y/Y growth in LCD sales forecast in 2009 that is an offset by an expected decline in plasma display panel (PDP) sales, according to European market research specialist Meko Research.

At the upcoming DisplayForum 2008 to be held November 4-5 in Dsseldorf, Germany, delegates will gain insight on the latest news, trends and forecasts for the digital signage market. The Digital Signage session will feature presentations from all facets of this rapidly growing sector including experts from the media industry (CBS Outdoor), the digital signage software business (Scala) and the networking infrastructure segments (Cisco), as well as companies making the signage sets and panels themselves (NEC, Sharp and Philips)mapping out the market outlook for 2009 and beyond.

PDP for digital signage applications is much stronger in the US public display market than in Europe based on feedback from DisplaySearch. European buyers prefer to purchase LCDs for this application, said Bob Raikes, Managing Director of Meko. Digital signage is seen as having a chance to resist the downturn in advertising expenditure, as it targets spending very effectively at the point of purchase. With a strong line up of digital signage representatives, this session at DisplayForum is definitely going to be very enlightening, Raikes added.

After tremendous 123% Y/Y shipment growth in 2007, public display shipments are expected to grow 8-15% over the next couple of years to more than 325,000 in 2010, according to Mekos DisplayCast Public Display Service.
