This article is brought to you by Retail Technology Review: New compact multi-purpose label printer from Sato.

A new, compact label and wristband printer, the CG4, designed for general purpose barcode label applications in the distribution and logistics sector has been launched in the UK by Sato. This latest machine in the company's CG series offers top-end performance at affordable prices. Said to be ideal for on-demand low to mid-range volumes, it can be used to print labels up to four inches wide for use across a range of industries from manufacturing, transport and retailing, to food and healthcare. It is also a useful addition to any general office and has been designed to be easy to operate and maintain by staff at all skill levels, even if they have never used this type of equipment before.

Similar to it's smaller relative in the CG series, the ultra-compact CG2 launched earlier this year, the CG4 can be used for shipping and compliance labelling, product identification, item tracking and a host of other everyday  labelling and identification needs. Because it is compact and can be run without a PC, using Sato's standalone keypad option, this new model can be sited almost anywhere, from front office to warehouse, packing station or factory floor. The CG4 is especially useful where hygiene is important, such as in a food handling or healthcare environment as, like many in the SATO printer range, it features an anti-microbial casing.

In addition to printing 4-inch (105mm) labels, the CG4 comes in a choice of 203 or 305 dpi (dots per inch) and thermal transfer/direct thermal versions. It incorporates the latest in on-board linear and 2D barcode symbologies, including GS1 Databar, which enables more information than ever before to be incorporated into a smaller barcode. It also features multiple interfaces such as USB, LAN, parallel and serial. For maintenance the CG4's cover opens a full 90 degrees, so labels are even easier to load . No tools are needed to replace print heads and platen rollers. To add to its versatility there are also cutter, dispenser and real time clock options.

"The CG4 aims to build on the success of the earlier CG2," said Brian Lang, Managing Director of Sato International Europe. "The addition of a 4-inch multi-purpose desktop printer enables us to offer customers a brand new product that gives them great value but at affordable prices crucial in today's cash-strapped business world. The CG4's design means that its compact size does not compromise its performance and the price will help customers to see a return on their investment in a shorter time."
