Leader Price opts for Sato's TH2 printers enabling it to comply with the new European labelling regulations

Leader Price, a low-price mass retailer with outlets throughout France, wanted to stay ahead of the new European regulations for the labelling of food products, and has selected Sato as its supplier of a comprehensive label printing solution. Sato, the barcode printing, labelling and EPC/RFID solutions provider, recommended its portable TH2 printer for the retailer's baking areas in more than 180 stores, as its automatic functions make it ideal for simple use.

The new European regulations impose various regulatory mentions on food products as from 14 December 2014, and set minimum font sizes for enhanced legibility.  Sato already supplied the retailer with CT4i printers, so when it was renovating its baking areas, it was quite natural for the group to turn to Sato once again, this time for portable printers that would enable it to comply with the regulations.

Sato provided Leader Price with a solution consisting of intelligent autonomous printers linked to a database and connected to the network for automatic updating whenever necessary. Sato's TH2 printers meet the retailer's requirements by providing a compact, lightweight solution that is easy to use, thanks to the clear instructions displayed on the screen. TH2 printers also meet the health requirements that are essential in the food sector, thanks to their antimicrobial casings that comply with current health standards.

The smart TH2 printers also include Application Enabled Printing (AEP) technology in their design, which enables Leader Price to personalise all the printer functions and enter user-specific calculations, such as the automatic calculation of best-before dates for each product.

The Sato team developed the best possible TH2 configuration for Leader Price to ensure that the product was able to execute all these functions. Sato carried out careful preliminary research to develop a tool that was ready to use. Sato 's IT department arranged the essential technical preparation work on the printers prior to delivery, and included an automatic database updating feature on each unit, which links to Leader Prices' central server via the LAN.  Finally, the Sato team installed the AEP system on the printers to facilitate their implementation. The units were ready to print labels including the latest information updates.

Since installing the new printers, Leader Price's employees have found them very easy to use as they only need to enter the product code in the TH2.  Then the unit automatically calculates the best-before date, downloads the barcodes, prices and lists of ingredients, including any allergens, and the storage temperature; the store's name and address are configured permanently. The users enter the number of labels required, and then simply print them out, and the labels contain all the necessary consumer information in a clear layout.  Leader Price has also benefited from a reduction in labelling errors.

Sato supplies labels that are free of bisphenol A to further meet Leader Price's requirements. The dimensions have been set specially to include all the necessary information. Each Sato TH2 printer has its own accessories, including keyboard protectors, cables and cleaning sprays. Sato has also drawn up a maintenance contract for each unit to ensure technical follow-up and enable swift printer repairs in the event of a failure.

Aude Pradier at Leader Price comments, "Leader Price was able to rely on Sato 's ability to provide a labelling solution that meets our requirements. The Sato printers have made work considerably easier for the members of the team in stores and especially in the baking areas. The units are autonomous, lightweight, and easy to use, and they reduce labelling errors. Leader Price gives priority to quality products at low prices, with full, clear information on their labels."
