Alibaba Cloud and Qarnot link to make green computing advances

This article is brought to you by Retail Technology Review: Alibaba Cloud and Qarnot link to make green computing advances.

Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, has announced a new partnership with Qarnot, a European pioneer that specializes in empowering enterprise digital transformation with advanced technologies such as distributed cloud computing, IoT and blockchain.

The two firms will harness their complementary strengths to develop new and green solutions targeting the financial sector initially, before expanding out into other areas in which they can deliver significant value together.

The soaring demand for computing resources is moving in tandem with the need to explore new ways to manage the ecological challenges this creates. Qarnot's breakthroughs to date have been in ways to offer cloud computing services through a fully distributed infrastructure – microprocessors embedded in computing heaters, and to channel the heat created to more effective uses. The collaboration will utilize Alibaba's strong cloud infrastructure and Qarnot's technology in green computing to advance decentralized computing and support increased demand in the deployment of high performance computing (HPC) solutions.

"The partnership aims to deliver innovative solutions while reducing the ecological cost of computing technology for our clients. Alibaba Cloud will leverage Qarnot's expertise and leadership in developing green distributed computing technologies to empower green technology in Europe. Our initial focus here in France will lead us to empower industry-leading banks and financial institutions in particular," said Yeming Wang, General Manager of Alibaba Cloud Europe.

"We are happy to join hands with a leading global player that has a clear vision in Europe and understands Qarnot's value proposition for greener decentralized cloud computing that will make buildings smarter. By leveraging Alibaba Cloud's strong cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, we will be able to offer new solutions to our customers", says Erik Ferrand, Head of Business Development at Qarnot.

The strategic collaboration will focus on the two elements:

  • Green and cloud computing. The combined computing solutions of Alibaba Cloud and Qarnot will offer clients the advantages of seamless access to both Alibaba Elastic Cloud Services resources and Qarnot's decentralized green computing resources.
  • Smart building. AI and big data capabilities from Alibaba Cloud will be combined with Qarnot's heating solutions to provide smart management of a building's energy efficiency.
