All businesses are looking to add some security and certainty to the way they do business right now. They are looking for ways to cut out the chances that someone else’s delays will cause them problems, that they can increase transparency and have more control over every aspect.

That means that we are all thinking about ways to bring the parts of our businesses that we have previously outsourced in-house, and if we are expanding, how can we take those responsibilities on ourselves. That is why so many companies out there are thinking about investing in a warehouse space.

For any business that deals with a lot of goods or is sending orders out on a daily basis, having your own warehouse space is not just a good idea, it is essential. However, if you are just starting your own company or have never worked with a warehouse space before, you may find the prospect overwhelming. There are a lot of different elements to consider and tools that you will need to acquire, so let’s break down what you need to know.

Be Clear On How Much Space You Need

One of the first questions that you should be asking yourself once you have established that you need a warehouse space is: how much warehouse space is enough? Generally speaking, it is better to err on the side of having more space than is strictly necessary. However, given the rising costs that we are seeing everywhere, from energy costs to petrol costs, you do not want to spend more than you can afford on space that you are not using. Sit down with your department heads to come up with the most precise numbers you can before you start talking to a property agent.

Pallets Are Essential

You will need to invest in a long list of different tools and appliances for your warehouse space, but pallets are at the top of the list. Pallets will keep your goods and packages off the ground and can be easily stored. You will also need to make sure that you have some good pallet movers for your staff to use. The range of different pallet movers on offer may surprise you, and it is up to you whether you want to spring for an electric pallet mover or go with the more traditional pallet trolley. Do you need a high lift pallet truck if you have a big warehouse space? To browse pallet trucks and speak to a supplier with years of experience, visit The Workplace Depot. They operate with a network of over 75 distributors, and they manufacture a large number of their products in the UK.

Where Do You Need The Space To Be?

The chances that you will be able to find the perfect warehouse space just around the corner from your office are probably fairly low (although that does not mean that it is not worth checking!). With that in mind, you should think carefully about the most practical location for the space. Are you confident enough in your team that distance from head office is not an issue? Or are your office team members going to need to be able to have access to the warehouse space whenever they need it?

Take Safety Seriously

As a responsible employer, one of your biggest priorities when setting up your warehouse space will be worker safety. To start with, make sure that you have taken out the right insurance to cover your company in case of any accidents or injuries on the property. Then, commission a thorough inspection of the space to identify any potential hazards. Make sure that any possible hazards are clearly signposted and that you have signs up detailing any protective gear that staff need to be wearing on-site.

It is your responsibility to supply your team with protective items and to give them the proper safety training. This is a legal requirement, and failure to do this will make you liable if any injuries or accidents should occur. You also need to ensure that a proper first aid kit is available. Finally, keeping the warehouse space tidy is a safety requirement so having clearly marked waste bins is very important.

You Need Packaging Materials

If you are asking yourself how much you need to order in when it comes to packaging materials, the answer is more than you might think. You do not want to find yourself out of materials when a big order comes in. You also need to consider that many customers and clients are demanding recycled and recyclable packaging materials in light of the current climate crisis. What’s more, the UK government has introduced a plastic packaging tax. Do your homework to find a green packaging solution that is also affordable and practical for your business. This is going to be a major factor in customer satisfaction in the months ahead.
