This article is brought to you by Retail Technology Review: edd:e helps retailers go green and save money.

A new product has been launched which can help retailers improve their energy efficiency by up to 27 per cent. Energy costs, which are typically one of the most significant and inflexible overheads, can be substantially reduced using the latest in energy monitoring technology.

edd:e (Electronic Digital Display of Information and Energy) is the latest product from Tyne and Wear-based EMU Systems. The device, which has a patent pending in the UK, Europe and North America, measures the use of electricity, temperature and humidity in commercial properties.

Supermarket giant Tesco is just one of the major retailers which has shown an interest in the product. Trials in two stores are due to start within the next month.

For many commercial users, edd:e offers the first opportunity to identify circuit level energy consumption as it is being used on the premises. The device measures instantaneous power at an individual circuit level and delivers real-time data to the ask-eddie.com website which can be accessed by customers 24 hours a day.

Unlike smart meters on the market, the edd:e system groups energy consumption by type and location of usage depending on the customers specific requirements. For example, it will group all air conditioning circuits or lighting circuits or collate and evaluate energy consumption trends in a particular area of a building.

With the help and expertise of the EMU Systems team, users can identify any unusual, unexpected or above average energy patterns and can take steps towards reducing unnecessary consumption.

A number of test sites across a range of industries have realised energy reductions of up to 27 per cent within 12 months of installation which in turn translates into an attractive return on their investment.

With the government introducing statutory energy saving schemes for businesses, such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment, there is greater pressure on organisations of all sizes to take a critical look at their green credentials.

EMU Systems Commercial Director Charlie Wainwright said:

Energy costs have always been a significant overhead for retailers with complex lighting, security, storage and refrigeration all requiring significant electricity. On top of this is the issue of climate change which is a particularly hot topic at the moment; businesses cannot ignore their environmental responsibilities.

He continues: edd:e is unlike any other meter on the market and can help retailers reduce their carbon footprint and treat energy overheads as a manageable cost for the first time.

The system is totally non-intrusive and with detailed results available in real-time online, it makes managing energy consumption quick and convenient and can really help businesses meet their environmental objectives.

Installation of edd:e can be completed swiftly. After a site survey, the set-up, usually takes less than a day to be completed.

The EMU team based in Jarrow, near Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, will be supported by a network of approved installer partners operating throughout England, Scotland and Wales.
