With the growth of card sales and proliferation of mobile EPOS card terminals, the opportunity for hackers to launch a cyberattack is dramatically increased, says Vodat International, the network security provider to the retail industry.

"With retailers operating from multiple locations and various employees and third-party IT professionals accessing mobile EPOS terminals, hacking has become much easier," said Paul Leybourne of Vodat International. "Once malware is introduced into an EPOS system it can automatically harvest customers' card data as it passes through. Hackers can then either use this data for their own ends, or worse still sell it on."

In its new Security Guide, Vodat recommends that retailers:

• Deploy software that can automatically monitor your EPOS system
• Install the best firewall and anti-virus software available
• Ensure mobile EPOS terminals are connected to a dedicated secure Wi-Fi network
• Account for every terminal at the end of the day to ensure they don't fall into the wrong hands
