This article is brought to you by Retail Technology Review: J2 Retail Systems further demonstrates its 'eco' commitment by extending its 'green' philosophy to its peripherals partners..

Global manufacturer of PC-based touchscreen EPoS tills, J2 Retail Systems, has taken its commitment to eco-friendly EPoS manufacture, usage and disposal a stage further. The company wishes to minimise the impact on the environment of its products and has now turned its attention to the partners from whom it sources its peripherals.

J2 has recently signed a partnership agreement with the international manufacturer of retail and hospitality POS receipt printers, Star Micronics EMEA. J2 will now supply Star's products in the UK and Europe as part of a J2 POS solution, and is actively endorsing Star's TSP100 ECO model as the world's first POS printer with demonstrable eco-credentials.

J2's CEO and co-founder, Moray Boyd, explains that as his company's EPoS units are designed according to a 'green' strategy, it was natural to look for shared values in its peripherals partners. "We've seen how our design principles increase POS reliability and longevity and help our clients to be more energy-efficient.  J2 clients can be environmentally responsible and, at the same time, enjoy the lowest cost of POS ownership available today," he says. "We wanted to be able to recommend a printer that was fully compatible with our 'green' POS solutions, and used less power and less paper."

Star's TSP100 ECO printer proves its energy-savings credentials in two main ways. When not in use, it reverts to 'standby' mode, thereby using up to 40% less power. This machine also offers paper-saving features including 'receipt on demand'. These features result in reduced usage, fewer and faster till roll changes and till rolls savings of up to 70%, not to mention a reduced carbon footprint for the user.

To underline its commitment to 'green' practices, Star has signed up to a Carbon Offset Programme. The company has purchased CERS (certified emission reductions) to offset the CO2 produced from the TPS100 ECO's manufacturing and disposal process, and to cover up to 5 years' projected usage. Clients can print certificates showing they are limiting the environmental damage caused by their use of these machines.

A number of J2's EPoS tills stand out for their small carbon footprint and low environmental impact. These include the fanless J2 615, the J2 580 which can be fanned or fanless, and the J2 650 which has a 'green' operating mode and a 24-volt printer power port. All J2 units fully conform with RoHS and WEEE directives restricting the use of hazardous substances in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, and controlling the processes of equipment manufacture, supply, use, recycling and disposal.

Concludes Boyd: "A partnership with Star allows us to further our philosophy of supplying eco-friendly products. Star's TSP100 ECO printer perfectly complements our machines and our values, and means we can recommend it to J2 clients with a clear conscience."
